Inherent problems with the music industry have left many well-known artists without recording contracts, and therefore, no distribution for new product. Meaning that many of these artists no longer have a solid way to get their music to fans worldwide. Because of this, many retail chains or brick & mortar outlets won't stock their albums because those Artists are now on unknown indie labels or operating on their own DIY label.

The Major Labels provide the Artists with what they need most........ promotion & distribution. The Labels have the budget, resources, & the experience to get it done. But when the Label drops the Artist, all of that disappears. No Label equals no more budget. No budget equals no more promotion. No promotion gets no distribution. And no distribution equals little, or no sales.

Perhaps the "Powers that be" at the record companies decided that an Artist is no longer hip & exciting. Or perhaps, they've just simply decided that an Artist's style of music is no longer marketable or profitable with today's younger generation. Regardless of the reasons for the "how & why", the fact remains that there are MANY gifted and talented artists that still have so much to give. In the past, Record Labels have made their fortunes by taking advantage of the young, naive & struggling Artist. Often times keeping the majority of money brought in by album & single sales. It's not uncommon for an artist to get a dollar or less from each unit that is sold. This is a practice that still continues to this day for Artists that are signed to Major Labels. However, in all fairness to the Labels, as the price of CDs increases, so has the amount of money that an artist receives per unit. But it still rarely exceeds 3 or 4 dollars per unit sold.

But the cold, hard fact remains that the Label retains the most profit. Not the Artist.
